How Hungarian numbers work
Perfectly logical
Unlike English ("eleven, twelve, thirteen…"), Hungarian numbers are completely regular from 11 onwards. Once you know 1–10 and the tens, you can build any number — including hundreds, thousands, and years.
Tens + units, no "and"
Compound numbers are formed by simply joining the ten and the unit: huszon + egy = huszonegy (21). No connecting word, no reversal.
Irregular tens
20 = húsz but compounds use huszon-. 30 = harminc (not "három-tíz"). The tens 20–90 each have their own word, then compounds attach directly.
No plural after numbers
In Hungarian, nouns after numbers stay singular: három ház = three house (not houses). This is the opposite of English.
How compound numbers are built
| # | Hungarian | Built from | Literal logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | tizenegy | tizen + egy | ten + one |
| 14 | tizennégy | tizen + négy | ten + four |
| 21 | huszonegy | huszon + egy | twenty + one (huszon- = compound form of húsz) |
| 35 | harmincöt | harminc + öt | thirty + five |
| 47 | negyvenhét | negyven + hét | forty + seven |
| 99 | kilencvenkilenc | kilencven + kilenc | ninety + nine — long but logical! |
| 200 | kétszáz | két + száz | two + hundred — "egy" is dropped for 100 itself, but 2 shortens to "két" |
| 358 | háromszázötvennyolc | háromszáz + ötven + nyolc | three-hundred + fifty + eight, all stacked with no spaces |
| 1000 | ezer | Its own word — "egy" is dropped again, just like with 100 | |
| 1932 | ezerkilencszázharminckettő | ezer + kilencszáz + harminc + kettő | a typical grandparent birth year: 1000 + 900 + 30 + 2 |
Ordinal numbers
Add -adik / -edik / -ödik (or shortened form -ik) to make ordinals. Most follow this pattern, with a few exceptions for 1st–3rd. Click any number below to hear it.
Hundreds — 100 to 2000
Hundreds follow the exact same logic as tens: unit + száz. "Egy" (one) is dropped — it's simply száz, never "egyszáz". Just like kettő shortens to két before a noun, 2 shortens the same way here: kétszáz, not "kettőszáz". Past 1000, "ezer" takes over the same way "száz" did: ezerötszáz (1500), kétezer (2000). Years, up to 2030
Years are just numbers with ezer (thousand) added the same way száz was added for hundreds: ezer = 1000, kétezer = 2000. Every 20th-century year starts with ezerkilencszáz- ("one-thousand-nine-hundred…") — which is exactly why grandparents' and great-grandparents' birth years, usually somewhere in 1900–1980, nearly always begin the same way.
